GLOBAL DAY OF PRAYER UK UPDATE - OCT 2008

Body:

As we live through incredible days of shaking, we gain strength and confidence in our God ‘who was and who is and who is to come’. Many are seeking the Lord as to how we handle the remaining four years of the 7 year strategy that was given in July 2005 – seven years to prepare this nation spiritually and seven years to make a difference (to access the full copy of this go to www.prayerforum.org).

Across the British Isles, we continue to hear that more and more people are being stirred to pray. The desire to begin to set up continuous 24-7 prayer is growing in many different parts of the nations. A new vision for houses of prayer is being birthed. New initiatives linking prayer and mission continue linked to Hope08. Planning for the Olympic Games is now coming into view!

Global Day of Prayer 2009

For us on the Global Day of Prayer journey, now is the time for us to seek the Lord for what He wants for us in 2009! A number of places have already indicated that they are wanting to link in for 2009 either on Pentecost Sunday itself or through the 10 days of prayer before hand. Please keep us posted of your plans so we can try and gain a sense of how the Lord is leading.

If you need help in organising your 2009 GDOP event
Many of us handle the organisation for GDOP events ourselves, but for any wanting to do larger events I am passing on the details of Pure Solutions. Pure Solutions has been working with GDOP London for the past two years and managed all aspects of the stadium events at West Ham and Millwall – even running the online ticketing. They have years of experience of working on Christian events and will be able to help you with all aspects of planning and delivery to ensure that your event is run both creatively and safely.

    2010... and beyond

As you will have seen from the recent newsletter from South Africa, Graham Power and the organisers of the Global Day of Prayer in South Africa are now talking about 2010 and beyond. In London, we are working towards Wembley Stadium sometime in 2010 and then on to whatever the Lord wants to do for the Olympic Games. We will be in touch again with prayer updates and GDOP news through the autumn and into the New Year.

With thanks for partnership in the gospel!

Pray with your local church on Pentecost Sunday 11th May

  • Please consider using the suggested prayers printed below in your Pentecost Sunday morning service. They are also attached in Word and Power Point ready for use.
  • They have been taken from the Global Day of Prayer World Prayer which will be used today by millions of Christians in over 192 countries.
  • The whole prayer outline can be accessed on www.globaldayofprayer.co.uk.
  • You will no doubt wish to include various issues of local concern in your Pentecost intercessions but you may be interested to know that a particular Global Day of Prayer focus at Millwall is to be the wellbeing of Young People and the root causes of Gun and Knife crime in our communities.
  • The Millwall prayer event may be seen as a culmination of our local denominational services of worship where we come together from across the city to pray, worship and celebrate the festival of Pentecost. This event is intricately linked with the Pentecost Festival and Hope ‘08.
  • Please use these prayers to promote the GDOP London vision of Prayer, Unity and Transformation.
  • Please encourage members of your congregation to attend the Prayer Event at Millwall Football Stadium, Zampa Road, London SE16 3LN. For those who haven’t booked already tickets are available at the gate.
  • A GDOP London 10-day Prayer Guide for Churches is available as a resource on request.
  • A Prayer for the Church

“They lifted their voices to God with one accord”’ - Acts 4.34

Almighty God – Father, Son and Holy Spirit,
Together with believers all over the world,
We gather today to glorify Your Name.
Apart from You, we can do nothing.
Transform Your Church into the image of Jesus Christ.
Release Your power to bring healing to the sick,
freedom to the oppressed and comfort to those who mourn.
Pour Your love into our hearts and fill us with compassion
to answer the call of the homeless and the hungry
and to enfold orphans, widows and the elderly in Your care.

All : Holy Spirit, we need Your comfort and guidance. Transform our hearts.

    A Prayer for the City/Nation

    “If my people…will humble themselves...” - 2 Chronicles 7:14
    Father of mercy and grace,
We acknowledge that we have sinned
and that our world is gripped by the power of sin.
Our hearts are grieved by injustice, hatred and violence.
We are shamed by oppression, racism and bloodshed in our land.
We mourn all loss of life in murder, war and terrorism.
Our homes are broken and our churches are divided by rebellion and pride.
Our lives are polluted by selfishness, greed, idolatry and sexual sin.
We have grieved Your heart and brought shame to Your Name.
Have mercy on us as we repent with all our hearts.

All : God of mercy, forgive our sins. Pour out Your grace and heal our land.

    A Prayer for the World

“For God so loved the World…” - John 3.16

    Lord Jesus Christ,
We lift our voices in unison with believers from Africa and Asia,
from the Middle East and Europe, from North and South America,
and from Australia and the Pacific Islands
May people from every tribe and language become Your followers
so that Your blessing brings transformation among all peoples.
Let Your kingdom be established in every nation of the world
so that governments will rule with righteousness and justice.
And may Your Name be great, from the rising of the sun to its setting.

All : Jesus Christ, You are the Saviour of the world and the Lord of all.
